   'SITANUNKU' LODGE RESORT
                 THE RIVER GAMBIA

"A beautiful Idyllic location away from it all offering peace & serenity in a truly African setting.

   AFRICAN-ANGLING FISHING AT 'SITANUNKU'

'Sitanunku' Lodge Resort is situated on the North bank of the River Gambia Estuary, enjoying a secluded waterfront location overlooking Dog Island.

View from Sitanunku over to Dog IslandDog Island & Sitanunku

Inshore shallow waters with numerous rocky scars & sandbanks provide rich fishing grounds.  Bait fishing with local fresh shrimps, fresh-cut fish baits & live-baits give the angler the opportunity to target a host of localized species: Including:  Captain Fish, Ladyfish, Cassava, Snapper, Catfish, & Large Rays, etc.

Captain Fish

In the tidal waters of the River, deep channels, rocky shelves and deep holes with ever-changing tidal currents also provide a great environment to target the bigger fish.  The Gambia is home to some of the world’s best Atlantic Tarpon fishing.  These big fish ranging from 50kg to 150kg pass seasonally in numbers through the bait-rich waters of the River Gambia.

For many years international anglers head to this location to battle it out with the ‘Silver King’ of the sea!  The waters around Dog Island are home to more monster fish including world record breaking Stingrays, Snappers, Threadfins, Croakers and Catfish.

SHORE ANGLING AT 'SITANUNKU'

'Sitanunku' Lodge Resort is also a great location for Shore Angling and is ideal for small groups of anglers wanting to travel together.

The location speaks for itself.  A Peninsular jutting out into the River Gambia Estuary, rocky scars and deep channels along the river banks on its southern side and open sandy bays & beachfront on its northern shore-line.

Aerial View of Dog Island and Sitanunku Point

DOG ISLAND
-  It’s north facing edge extends out with laterite rocky scars and pools that become exposed and covered as the tide ebbs and flows.  Oyster mangroves fringe each surrounding edge with a secluded oyster shell beach tucked behind, facing the peninsular.

THIS VARIED ENVIRONMENT gives the shore angler the opportunity to fish a variation of waterfronts that are so diverse almost any combination of tackle can be used at some point.  For the beach fishing in open sandy bays a conventional beach casting outfit is often used to punch out the bait beyond breaking waves.  Alternatively, lighter bass, carp and catfish outfits are also a popular choice and are used effectively when fishing from rocks & scars.  Casting out long distances is not necessary over this kind of ground, so a lighter rig can be used.  These type of outfits also double up as heavy spinning outfits.  A wide range of larger lures can be cast from the shore and retrieved targeting a number of species.   Lighter spinning outfits can be used for fishing from exposed rocky outcrops as well as float- fishing and spinning from the 50m jetty.  Fly fishing outfits can be used whilst stalking along the embankments, shallow wading in the bays or casting from the jetty.

THE JETTY

At Sitanunku Lodge Resort, there is a 50mtr jetty built out into the River Gambia, wide, sturdy and with a large T-end, shaded with seats and table areas, makes for a great fishing platform.  The jetty is also lit up during the evening allowing for great night fishing.   Many other designated fishing stations along the camp’s shore-line are also lit at night making an accessible 24hr shore angling venue, day and night.
